[Archived] UPDATE: Alexandria Police Complete Internal Investigation in Fatal Office-Involved Shooting

The Alexandria Police Department’s internal investigation of the fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 18, has concluded that the use of lethal force was reasonable and in compliance with Department policy.

In July, Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Sengel cleared the officers involved in the shooting of any criminal wrongdoing. His released report states, “Under these circumstances, the law clearly supports the conclusion that the officers were entitled to use deadly force in response and that they fired in self-defense.”

An internal investigation determined that the officers’ use of lethal force to be reasonable and in compliance with Alexandria Police Department Policy and is consistent with Police Department training. Alexandria Police Department policy allows the use of lethal force when, “an employee reasonably believes that the action is in the defense of human life, including the employee’s own life, or in the defense of any person in imminent danger of serious physical injury.”

The officers involved in the shooting of Mr. Sellers have all returned to work following the conclusion of the internal investigation. 

UPDATE: Alexandria Police Identify Subject in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting 

The deceased in yesterday’s fatal officer-involved shooting has been identified as Taft Sellers, 30, City Resident.

Alexandria Police Investigate Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting 

Alexandria police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred earlier today.

At approximately 2:00 p.m., officers responded to the 3400-block of Duke Street for reports of a domestic incident. Once on scene, officers encountered a suspect with a weapon and were involved in a fatal police-involved shooting. An investigation into the events that led to the shooting is ongoing.

The Department’s Criminal Investigations Section and Internal Investigations Unit are conducting investigations into the shooting.

Per Departmental policy, the involved officers have been put on administrative leave with pay during the investigation.
