[Archived] City of Alexandria Celebrates National Public Lands Day on September 28

For Immediate Release: September 26, 2013

Celebrate National Public Lands Day in your own community by volunteering your efforts at a workday event at the newly acquired 5325 Polk Ave. site on September 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will help remove non-native invasive plants from the northwest corner of the property, as well as pick up litter.

The City acquired this wooded natural area in December 2012. The City’s purchase of this 2.34-acre property used the $1.5 million provided by the Department of Defense to mitigate loss of open space in the West End, as well as $0.4 million in City Open Space funds. On June 15, the Alexandria City Council held a ribbon cutting for the property.

The park is located at the north corner of the intersection of N. Pelham St. and Polk Ave. approximately 2 blocks northeast of the intersection of N. Van Dorn St. and Richenbacher Ave. in the west end of the City. Volunteers will meet at the park entrance.
