Back-To-School Reminders

The Alexandria Police Department, in its annual effort to foster the start of a safe school year, would like to remind motorists to be extra vigilant of children attending school throughout the City.

Please allow extra time to reach your destination as residents should expect increased traffic congestion throughout the week during the morning and afternoon hours. Throughout the City, School Crossing Guards will be at intersections to safely assist children to bus stops and schools. To help ensure pedestrian and bicyclist safety, patrol officers and motor units will be checking school zones and monitoring the safe loading and unloading of students from buses. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to use caution and maintain a safe driving environment.

The Police Department would like to remind drivers that the speed limit in school zones is posted at 15 or 25 mph. It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing lights. This action constitutes Reckless Driving and is subject to DMV fines. All violators of these laws will be ticketed. The Police Department strives to promote the safety and welfare of both children and adults. We ask for your help to make it a great start to a new school year.
