[Archived] Crews Repair Damaged Sewer Line Near Holmes Run

Repairs to Take Place During Evening of August 12

This morning, Avon Construction, while performing stream restoration work contracted by the City of Alexandria, inadvertently damaged an existing Fairfax County-owned, 30-inch terra cotta sewer line that crosses Holmes Run near Chambliss Street. A small amount of flow escaped from the broken pipe until the contractor was able to remove debris, which enabled flow to pass through the pipe without escaping. Fairfax County was immediately notified. County workers, who were nearby, were able to divert sewer flows away from the break via an upstream structure within minutes after the incident. It was determined there was no detrimental impact on the Holmes Run or life within. The contractor is now performing a temporary and then permanent repair, after which the main will be placed back in service. No customers were affected.

Residents are advised that work on the temporary repair will continue into the night; there will be some noise associated with pumps and equipment, and lights may also be used during the repair.
