[Archived] Springfield Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Feloniously Assaulting an Alexandria Police Officer

On Thursday, June 27, Clarence Tyree was sentenced in Alexandria Circuit Court to serve 15 years in prison for maliciously causing bodily injury to an Alexandria police officer.

In the early morning hours of December 25, 2012, an Alexandria patrol officer was investigating possible thefts from parked vehicles, and encountered Tyree, a 46-year-old Springfield man, in a private parking lot in the 100 block of South Peyton Street. When the officer attempted to detain Tyree, Tyree attacked the officer, punching the officer repeatedly in the head and knocking him to the ground. The attack left the officer unconscious and bleeding on the ground, at which point Tyree fled the scene. Other officers responded and a short while later, Tyree approached one of the officers and identified himself.

The officer was transported to the hospital and missed several weeks of work as a result of the attack. The officer has recovered and has resumed his duties as a patrol officer.  His name and other information will not be released.

The defendant was convicted on Tuesday, May 7 following a jury trial. The jury recommended that the defendant serve 15 years in prison for the assault, and Chief Circuit Court Judge Lisa Kemler imposed that recommendation today.
