[Archived] 3rd UPDATE: Grand Jury Indicts Suspect in Shooting of Officer Laboy

Earlier today, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, during its regular session, presented indictments to the Alexandria Circuit Court grand jury in the case involving the shooting of Officer Peter Laboy on February 27, 2013.

The grand jury returned indictments charging Kashif Bashir, 27, with Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Attempted Capital Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, and two counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony in the shooting of Officer Laboy. Bashir is represented by the Alexandria Public Defender’s Office. Prosecutors handling this case are Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Molly Sullivan and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter.

Trial dates for these cases will be selected within the next ten days.

2nd UPDATE: Alexandria Police Seek Witness in Shooting of Officer

Alexandria Detectives would like to speak to a witness who was on the scene of the injured officer at the corner of S. St. Asaph Street and Wilkes Street on Tuesday, February 26 at approximately 11:45 a.m. A witness arriving shortly after the officer was shot was told by an unidentified woman the description of the suspect vehicle and the direction of travel. Detectives would like this witness to come forward and speak with them about this case.

UPDATE: Alexandria Police Identify Officer and Suspect in Shooting

The officer involved in today’s shooting is Officer Peter Laboy. Officer Laboy is a 45-year-old, 17-year veteran of the police department. He has spent the past six years as a motorcycle officer in our Motor Unit.

The suspect is Kashif Bashir, a Pakistani male, 27 years-old, of Woodbridge, Virginia. He is in custody and has been charged with Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. He is being held without bond.

Alexandria Police Officer Seriously Injured

Today, at 11:44 a.m., an officer with the Alexandria Police Department issued a look out for a yellow cab regarding a minor offense. Almost immediately, a Motor Unit officer spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Shortly after, the Department of Emergency Communications began receiving 911 calls for an officer down. The officer was flown to Medstar Washington Hospital Center with life-threatening injuries. A look out was issued for a yellow cab minivan.

A patrol officer spotted the vehicle heading Southbound on Washington Street and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle sped off. A pursuit ensued into Fairfax County where the Fairfax County Police Department took over. The suspect vehicle ultimately crashed at Fort Hunt Road and Bellevue Boulevard. The driver was taken into custody. Fairfax County Police are handling the accident scene.

The investigation has revealed that the officer was shot and is listed in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.
