[Archived] City of Alexandria Recognizes Upcoming CAN Parade of Homes

May 18 Event Celebrates Regional Affordable Housing Communities

Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille has presented a proclamation recognizing the Washington DC region’s first-ever regional “parade” of affordable communities on Saturday, May 18. An initiative of the Communications Action Network (CAN), the CAN Parade of Homes will feature 17 communities throughout the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland.

The Parade of Homes will provide an opportunity for the public and the media to visit affordable housing developments throughout the region. Representing the City of Alexandria in the Parade of Homes is the Alexandria Housing Development Corporation property, The Station at Potomac Yard, which showcases a particularly creative mix of land uses, providing a much needed fire station, retail and affordable and workforce affordable housing within the same new structure. Tours of The Station are available to the community on May 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will include a visit to the new container garden on the building’s rooftop terrace. For a complete list of properties participating in the Parade of Homes or to learn more about CAN, visit www.caninitiative.org

The City’s proclamation celebrates CAN’s work in promoting awareness of the value that housing affordability brings to families, communities and employers and highlights the fact that today’s affordable housing is well built, well maintained and is designed to fit into the fabric of existing communities.
