On May 7, 2013, Mayor William D. Euille issued the following statement:
“The City of Alexandria recently learned from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) that Norfolk Southern has proposed doubling ethanol transloading operations at their facility on the City’s West End. Alexandria has longstanding concerns about the operations at this facility, and is strongly opposed to any increased operations. Public safety in our community is our top priority, and this proposed expansion will increase emissions and possible risks to the community from the facility. Also, it is difficult to accept that the City learned of this proposed change from VDEQ and not from Norfolk Southern. While the operations at the Norfolk Southern facility are not regulated by the City of Alexandria, our City Council will work with the community to make sure Norfolk Southern clearly understands our concerns, and our opposition to this proposal.”
