MEDIA ADVISORY

City of Alexandria to Celebrate 20th Annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

WHEN: Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 8 a.m.

WHERE: T.C. Williams High School Cafeteria, 3330 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22302

WHO: The City of Alexandria’s Commission for Women, Department of Community and Human Services and City Manager’s Office will co-sponsor the 20th Annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 25. Elizabeth Johnson, Chair of the Commission for Women, City Manager Rashad Young and Mayor William D. Euille will welcome all participants at an 8 a.m. kick-off breakfast held at T.C. Williams High School Cafeteria.

WHAT: Students from T.C. Williams High School and Minnie Howard Campus will be introduced to various career fields as they shadow City employees for the day. The media is invited to the kick-off at T.C. as well as to job sites when arranged in advance.

The event, nationally-sponsored by the Ms. Foundation, initially focused on taking girls to work, but in 2003, offered the opportunity to boys as well. The event not only encourages girls to consider their future career choices, but now gives both girls and boys the opportunity to observe men and women in positions of leadership in the workplace and community.

For more information or to arrange to visit a job site, contact Sarah Watson, Community Education Specialist, Department of Community and Human Services, at 703.746.3123 or sarah.watson@alexandriava.gov.
