On April 2, Virginia American Water announced the start of a water main upgrade on Henry Street in Alexandria that will enhance water quality, improve service reliability and increase flows for fire protection. The cost of the water system improvements is approximately $1.4 million. Beginning April 2, Virginia American Water will replace approximately 4,000 feet of four-, six- and eight-inch pipeline along Henry Street, from Duke Street to Madison Street, with new 12-inch water main. The project will be completed in phases, one block at a time, starting at Duke Street and progressing north.
Crews will work weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The estimated duration of the project is nine months. During the project, some residents of Henry Street will experience temporary interruption of their water service when individual service lines are changed over to the new main, as well as when the old main is cut and capped.
During work hours, one lane of traffic on Henry Street will be closed; two lanes will remain open. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of any temporary inconveniences.
