Active Aging Event: Dr. Kulund to Present Robust Walking Exercises

Put on your walking shoes and join orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dan Kulund of the Alexandria Commission on Aging as he demonstrates robust walking for seniors, the keystone of the new field of preventive orthopedics. Dr. Kulund’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Saturday, March 9, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the gymnasium of the Cora Kelly Recreation Center, 25 West Reed Ave, Alexandria. All ages are welcome.

Robust walking is a low-intensity version of the exercises practiced by President Theodore Roosevelt on the White House grounds in the early 1900s. A robust walker inserts exercises into a walk using environmental objects, such as benches, walls, poles, and trees as props. Neighborhoods that at first appear inhospitable to exercise are soon seen as exercise-friendly.

Dr. Kulund also invites participants to take part in a Train the Trainer session during this event for persons who wish to organize walks with friends in their own neighborhoods. No experience or equipment is needed except a good pair of shoes.

Dr. Kulund is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, former Chief of Health Promotion for the United States Air Force and a member of the City’s Commission on Aging. He is a research professor in the Department of Prevention and Community Health of the School of Public Health and Health Services at The George Washington University.

This presentation is sponsored by the Commission for Aging and the Department of Community and human Services. For additional information, contact Dr. Kulund at 703.850.0424 or dankulund@gmail.com. The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended.
