Meals on Wheels Begins City-funded Weekend Delivery with Kick-Off Event

WHEN:         July 14, 2012

WHERE:     Hermitage of Northern Virginia
                    5000 Fairbanks St.
                    Alexandria, VA  22311

WHAT:      Beginning Saturday July 14, home-bound seniors in Alexandria, who are Meals on Wheels recipients, will receive prepared meals on Saturdays in addition to the regular weekday meals they are currently getting. Media are invited to attend the kick-off event.

These additional Saturday Meals on Wheels are made possible through funds from the City’s Division of Aging and Adult Services and through private donations to Senior Services of Alexandria, which operates the Meals on Wheels program under contract with the City.  Now seniors in the City who meet the criteria can receive meals six days a week.

Beginning in the fall of 2012, seniors will receive Sunday meals as well, as a result of funding allocated by the Alexandria City Council.

The Division of Aging and Adult Services, part of the Department of Community and Human Services, is the City’s Area Agency on Aging and is the only Agency on Aging in the state that offers home delivered meals on weekends.

For more information contact, MaryAnn Griffin, Aging and Adult Services Director, Department of Community & Human Services, 703.746.5692 or maryann.griffin@alexandriava.gov.
