For Immediate Release: April 30, 2012
The City of Alexandria’s Commission for Women, the Department of Community and Human Services and the City Manager’s Office co-sponsored the 19th Annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 26. Students from T.C. Williams High School and the Minnie Howard Campus were introduced to various career fields in which they expressed an interest. City mentors for the day included Circuit Court Judge James Clark, Fire Captain Rodney Masser, Wendy Albert, owner and chef at Tempo Restaurant, and Councilman Frank Fannon.
Mentors and students met at a kick-off breakfast reception held in the Vola Lawson Lobby of Alexandria City Hall. Elizabeth Johnson, Chair of the Commission for Women, welcomed all participants and introduced Mayor William D. Euille. The theme for this year’s event was “Build Opportunity: 20 Years of Education, Empowerment, Experience.” City Manager Rashad Young explained that this year’s theme is a reflection of the City’s commitment to come together to educate and support our youth to become tomorrow’s leaders, in the community and in their own lives.
The event, nationally-sponsored by the Ms. Foundation, initially focused on taking girls to work, but in 2003, began including to boys as well. The event not only encourages girls to consider their future career choices, but now gives both girls and boys the opportunity to observe men and women in the workplace and community.
