Alexandria Police Participate in Litter Enforcement Month

During the month of April, the Alexandria Police Department is participating in the second Annual Litter Enforcement Month taking place throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area.  With support from the Alice Ferguson Foundation and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Police Chief’s Committee, the Alexandria Police Department has increased enforcement of existing litter and illegal dumping laws throughout the City. 

Litter Enforcement Month coincides with the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s 24rd Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup that occurred on Saturday, April 14.  During the cleanup, thousands of volunteers removed trash and debris from the Potomac River at hundreds of sites throughout DC, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Since 1989, the Potomac River Watershed Cleanups have resulted in the removal of more than 5 million pounds of litter.

 Litter Enforcement Month is part of the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Trash-Free Potomac Watershed Initiative.  The Alexandria Police Department encourages area residents to report instances concerning littering and illegal dumping in their communities, as well as to discourage the careless discarding of trash.
