City residents who are veterans with 100 percent service-connected disabilities or the surviving spouses of 100 percent service-connected disabled veterans who passed away on or after January 1, 2011, may qualify for a full exemption from real estate taxes. A veteran is considered to have a 100 percent service-connected disability if: (1) The veteran's disability is rated at 100 percent; or (2) The veteran's service-connection is rated at less than 100 percent, but the veteran is paid at the 100 percent disability rate due to being unemployable.
Applications for the City’s Real Property Tax Relief for Veterans with 100 Percent Service-Connected Disability are due April 16, 2012. Applications must be accompanied by certification of the veteran’s disability and, in the case of a surviving spouse, the veteran’s death certificate. Residents who received a real estate tax exemption from this program in 2011 do not need to reapply, unless their primary residence has changed. Letters concerning acceptance into the program or denial of tax relief will be mailed to all applicants in May.
