The following is a Joint Statement from City of Alexandria and Arlington County in response to Michael Pope’s recent story, “Arlington, Alexandria at a Stalemate on Streetcars.”
Arlington County and the City of Alexandria strongly disagree with the mischaracterization of a long-standing and constructive working relationship, especially on matters relating to the Route 1 Corridor. The relationship between the two jurisdictions is far from “reaching a boiling point “as noted by Mr. Pope in his article dated Monday, April 2.
For more than ten years, Arlington and Alexandria have partnered to assess and plan for the future of transportation along the Route 1 corridor. Both jurisdictions have worked cooperatively to advance transit improvements in the corridor. Currently, staff from both jurisdictions are performing jointly-funded studies to assess the potential environmental effects of a streetcar project connecting the City and the County.
Our elected officials and staff continue to coordinate and work cooperatively to advance needed transportation improvements in the corridor.
The Route 1 Corridor is a vital business and residential district for both Arlington and Alexandria, and we are committed to working together and fostering initiatives for the benefit our communities, as well as the entire region.
