[Archived] Celebrate Black History Month with Paul Robeson at the Carlyle Club February 12

February 12 Performance and Dinner Benefit Alexandria Black History Museum

Hugh Staples as Paul RobesonExperience the true spirit of Black History Month with actor, scholar and activist Paul Robeson at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria! On Sunday, February 12, actors Hugh Staples and Michael Hill will bring Robeson to life in a special one-night performance of “Paul Robeson, A Play by Philip Dean Hayes” at the Carlyle Club (411 John Carlyle Street).  A sumptuous dinner will begin at 5 p.m., followed at 7:30 p.m. by the 90-minute show. After the performance, Mr. Staples and Mr. Hill will answer questions from the audience. The snow date is Sunday, February 19.

This play, directed by Cody Jones, follows Paul Robeson (1898-1976) from his youth in New Jersey through his adult years as he traveled the world. An All-American athlete and a graduate of Columbia Law School, Robeson negotiated a complicated system of racism as he spoke out against the injustices he witnessed. Fighting for civil rights and labor causes, he triumphed in the midst of adversity that turned him into a modern-day martyr.

Tickets for the play and dinner are $65 per person. Tickets for the play only are $30 per person with limited seating in the bar. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Carlyle Club at 703.548.8899 or by booking online at www.thecarlyleclub.com. Proceeds benefit educational programming at the Alexandria Black History Museum.
