[Archived] Alexandria's City Hall to Get New Green Roof

Starting Monday, August 8th, residents, visitors and City employees will see an exciting new addition under construction at City Hall.  The City is installing vegetative “green” roofing on the East and West courtyard structures of City Hall, funded by a grant received through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s, Department of Energy’s, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program. The green roofing, which will be visible from City Hall’s second floor, will provide an aesthetically pleasing view into the courtyard. While the new roof is sure to brighten up the building’s exterior, City Hall will benefit in many other ways.  It will reduce City Hall’s energy consumption and costs, decrease storm water runoff, and provide a more fiscally responsible extension of the roof’s life span. The project is scheduled for completion in October, 2011.
