[Archived] Media Advisory: Alexandria City Council Approves New Grocery Store and Housing in North Old Town

On June 25, Alexandria City Council voted 7-0 to approve a development that will bring a new mixed-use, urban grocery store and multifamily housing to the North Old Town area of Alexandria. The project will be located at the 700 blocks of N. St. Asaph and N. Pitt Streets.

The retailer, Harris Teeter, will operate a full-service grocery store and pharmacy, with underground parking and outdoor seating for patrons who purchase prepared food foods. This new project will help address a major need in Old Town for a full-service grocery store. Market-rate multifamily housing will also be constructed, with 175 new rental units and underground parking for tenants.

Developers for the project will make significant public contributions, including nearly $600,000 for affordable housing, $400,000 for improvements to and maintenance of Montgomery Park, $40,000 for bus stop improvements, and a variety of streetscape improvements. The project will also create 150 new jobs and generate additional tax revenue for the City.
