[Archived] Fort Ward Museum Hosts New Civil War Spotlight Talks

With the Civil War Sesquicentennial underway, why not take an up-close look at Fort Ward Museum’s collections and exhibitions? Fort Ward’s new Civil War Spotlight Talks – free, ongoing 30-minute presentations – are a great way to learn more about Civil War history and soldier life!

The first Spotlight Talks will be held on Saturday, April 30, when visitors can meet “Henry,” Fort Ward’s resident artilleryman, through ongoing 30-minute presentations given between 10 a.m. and noon, and again between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The uniform, accoutrements and equipment of Fort Ward’s artillery exhibit figure will be discussed.

Then on Saturday, July 16, the Spotlight Talks will explore “Civil War Artillery Projectiles.” Learn about a variety of Civil War-period ammunition, from a 100-pounder Parrott shell to a Ketcham hand grenade. Examples from Museum exhibits and teaching collection will be featured in these half-hour presentations given between 10 a.m. and noon, and between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Civil War Spotlight Talks are free, and reservations are not required. New topics and dates will be announced periodically throughout the Sesquicentennial.

Fort Ward is the best-preserved fortification in the Defenses of Washington, which were built to protect the Union capital during the Civil War. The museum offers changing exhibits, tours, lectures, and interpretive programs throughout the year. Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site is located at 4301 West Braddock Road.
