The Virginia General Assembly has passed legislation amending the Code of Virginia to exempt certain disabled veterans and their surviving spouses from the real estate tax.  Disabled veterans and their surviving spouses will be exempt from real estate tax for tax year 2011 and subsequent years only under the following conditions:

• The veteran or surviving spouse has filed an exemption application, including documentation of the veteran's disability rating;
• The veteran has been or, in the case of a surviving spouse, was rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency as having a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability;
• The veteran or surviving spouse occupies the property as his or her principal residence; and
• In the case of a surviving spouse, the death of the veteran occurred on or after January 1, 2011, and the surviving spouse has not remarried.

Applications are now available for the City’s Real Property Tax Relief for Veterans with 100 Percent Service-Connected Disability. To obtain an application or to receive further information, please visit alexandriava.gov/taxrelief or contact Tax Services at taxrelief@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.3901, Option 6.  Applications are due June 1, 2011, and must be accompanied by certification of the veteran’s disability and, in the case of a surviving spouse, the veteran’s death certificate.
