Saturday, March 12 – Groundbreaking Ceremony for Witter Property Athletic Facilities

Wednesday, March 16 – BRAC-133 Advisory Group Meeting
The BRAC-133 Advisory Group will meet at 7 p.m. at Francis Hammond Middle School Auditorium. The Virginia Department of Transportation and their consultants will address the proposed HOV/Transit Ramp at Seminary Road and I-395, and discuss whether an Environmental Assessment or a Categorical Exclusion would be the appropriate level of review for this project. Wednesday, March 16 - Business Personal Property Tax Returns Mailed
The City of Alexandria has begun mailing 2011 Business Personal Property Tax returns to all businesses that were operating in the City as of January 1, 2011. All returns must be received or postmarked by May 2, 2011. The annual Business Personal Property Tax bill will be based on the return filed with the City. Any business that does not file a return will be statutorily assessed and billed for the Business Personal Property Tax. If your business does not receive a business personal property tax return by April 15, has ceased operations, or has had a change of address not previously reported to the City, please contact Business Tax staff at businesstax@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.3903.

Thursday, March 17 - High Capacity Transit Corridor Work Group Meeting
The City of Alexandria invites members of the public to attend the High Capacity Transit Corridor Work Group meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the John Adams Elementary School (Cafeteria), 5651 Rayburn Avenue. The school is transit accessible via DASH routes AT1 and AT2. The meeting will focus on the narrowed list of alignment alternatives for the Beauregard / Van Dorn corridor, and an overview of existing conditions for Corridor A (North-South) and Corridor B (Duke Street/Eisenhower). Thursday, March 17 - King Street Paving Project
The City of Alexandria is resurfacing King Street, between Strand Street and Diagonal Road.  The scope of the King Street improvement project will begin with concrete improvements to the curb and gutter, ADA accessible ramps at crosswalks, and will end with the milling and overlay of the existing pavement. Alexandria residents are invited to a public meeting about the scope and schedule of this project at 7 p.m., in Sister Cities Conference Room 1101, Alexandria City Hall, 301 King Street. Climate Change Meetings
The City of Alexandria's Environmental Policy Commission (EPC) and Office of Environmental Quality invites members of the public to attend two upcoming meetings about climate change.  Take part in the City's Eco-City Alexandria initiative, learn about the science of climate change, and give feedback towards the draft Energy and Climate Change Action Plan.

Nominations Sought for Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award
The Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission and the Alexandria Sanitation Authority are now accepting nominations for the 3rd Annual Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award. Nominations can be for any Alexandria resident, group, club, organization or corporate neighbor who has demonstrated their commitment to protecting the natural environment and promoting environmental sustainability within Alexandria. All nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 31. Detailed information is located on the Alexandria Earth Day website. The recipient(s) of the Ellen Pickering Award will be publicly recognized and have a tree planted in their honor at Alexandria Earth Day 2011 on Saturday, April 30.

Nominations Sought for Awards Sponsored by Commission on Persons with Disabilities
The Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities is seeking nominations for two annual awards that honor local residents. The John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Award recognizes an individual who has advocated for persons with disabilities and includes a $500 donation in the recipient’s name to an organization that contributes to the promotion of equal opportunity for persons with disabilities. The Gerry Bertier Scholarship, sponsored by HeimLantz CPAs, awards up to a $1,000 merit based scholarship to a City of Alexandria resident with a disability or to a student at a school located in the City of Alexandria who seeks post-secondary education. Winners will be recognized at a reception on June 28. Free Tax Preparation for Low-Income Residents
Free tax preparation assistance is available to low-income residents through April 13 at the Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services, 2525 Mount Vernon Ave. Low-income City residents can get help filing federal and state income tax returns and applying for all applicable credits and deductions on Saturday mornings beginning at 9 a.m. and Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. Spanish-speaking preparers will be available. To request a reasonable disability accommodation or to receive materials in an alternative format, contact Suzanne Kratzok, Coordinator of Community Resources, at 703.746.5663 (703.836.1493 TTY) at least 48 hours prior to the session you wish to attend.
