[Archived] Celebrate Black History Month with Paul Robeson at the Carlyle Club

February 13 Performance and Dinner Benefit Alexandria Black History Museum

Hugh Staples as Paul RobesonExperience the true spirit of Black History Month with actor, scholar and activist Paul Robeson at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria! On Sunday, February 13, actor Hugh Staples will bring Robeson to life in a special one-night performance of “Paul Robeson, A Play by Philip Dean Hayes” at the Carlyle Club (411 John Carlyle Street). The show begins at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a sumptuous dinner and a discussion with the actor. Proceeds benefit educational programming at the Alexandria Black History Museum.

This play, directed by Cody Jones, follows Paul Robeson (1898-1976) from his youth in New Jersey through his adult years as he traveled the world. An All-American athlete and a graduate of Columbia Law School, Robeson negotiated a complicated system of racism as he spoke out against the injustices he witnessed. Fighting for civil rights and labor causes, he triumphed in the midst of adversity that turned him into a modern-day martyr.

Following the 90-minute performance, guests will enjoy their choice of a two- or three-course meal. Tickets begin at $40 per person with reduced rates for children or guests who attend the play only. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling the Alexandria Black History Museum at 703.746.4356.
