FORT WARD AD HOC ADVISORY GROUP SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT

The City of Alexandria’s Ad Hoc Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group is seeking public comment on the draft report and recommendations prepared by the advisory group. The Ad Hoc Advisory Group, established by City Council and appointed by the City Manager, began their one-year term in December 2009, and has spent the past 10 months developing recommendations for the City’s management and planning at Fort Ward Park, including the museum area. YOUTH SPORTS

Lil' Titans Youth Flag Football Begins Season
The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities' Sports Office begin its inaugural Lil' Titans Flag Football season on Saturday, October 17, at the George Washington Middle School Athletic Fields.  The Lil' Titans program has 72 girls and boys, between the ages of 5 and 6 years old participating in this developmental program.  Each of the six teams (Titans - Gold, Yellow, Black, Red, White and Blue), will play a five game season on Saturdays through November 13 at 12 pm, 1 pm. and 2 pm.  For a schedule of the games, visit alexandriava.gov/recreation or call the Youth Sports Office at 703.746.5402.

Late Night Basketball League Concludes Season
The Late Night Basketball League concluded its Fall season on Thursday, October 14, at the Charles Houston Recreation Center.  A crowd of over 125 people attended the closely contested Championship game in which the Terps defeated the Hoyas 46 - 43.   The young adult league is cosponsored by the Department of  Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, EYA of Alexandria and the Alexandria Urban League.  Registration for the Winter league is now open.  The Late Night League runs every Thursday night beginning at 9 pm four times each year.  Contact Bertha Coleman, Program Supervisor at 703.746.5552 or the Sports Office at 703.746.5402.

Coaches Needed
The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is currently seeking volunteers to coach youth Basketball, Cheerleading, Baseball and Softball.   Criminal history background checks are required.   Interested persons should call the Youth Sports Office at 703.746.5402 or e-mail mac.slover@alexandriava.gov or tamika.coleman@alexandriava.gov.

Youth Basketball Registration
The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities' is currently accepting registrations for the Winter Youth Basketball League for boys and girls ages 7 - 17 years old.  Registration fee is $30 per child and is available to City residents only. Registration deadline is November 15, 2010.  Registration forms are available at all neighborhood recreation centers, public libraries and the Department of Recreation Administrative office.  For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/recreation or call the Youth Sports Office at 703.746.5402.

Youth Fundamentals Basketball School
The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities' is now accepting registrations for the Youth Basketball Fundamentals School for boys and girls ages 5 - 6 years old.  The school will run Saturdays, November 6 through December 4, 2010 at the Nannie J. Lee Memorial Recreation Center.  The session will not be held on November 27. Participants will learn the fundamentals of ball handling, shooting, passing and dribbling.  Registration cost is $50 per child.  Space is limited and will be open until the session is filled. ASSIST IN THE RESTORATION OF THE CITY’S TREE CANOPY

The City of Alexandria experienced the loss of hundreds of trees and extensive damage throughout the City as a result of winter snow and summer thunderstorms in 2010. Residents, who want to help replenish the City’s tree canopy, may consider the following opportunities: Make a donation to the Living Landscape Fund of Alexandria; Request a street tree through the Street Tree Planting Program; or Purchase a tree from the City Tree Sale on October 23 at George Washington Middle School. Basket Workshop: Mountain Apple Basket Part I
Ages 16 and up. Join local artisan Debby Wells in this two-part class to create a beautiful basket perfect for carrying all your orchard goodies. Materials fee of $50 (covers sessions 1 and 2) payable to instructor day of class. Don’t forget to bring your tools! Min 12/Max 15.

Alexandria’s Prehistoric Peoples

JONES POINT PARK CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Jones Point Park, 65 acres in size, is and will remain owned, maintained and operated by the National Park Service as land of the US Department of Interior. The entire Jones Point Park will not be closed to public access during construction. The Royal Street Community Gardens, the Lee Street Community Gardens, the Mount Vernon Trail and the Community Recycling Center will have continuous public access. Public access to some portions of the park will be temporarily/intermittently closed while improvements are being made.
