[Archived] Volunteers Needed to Teach ESL Class

The Hispanic Orientation and Education Program is seeking volunteer teachers for its English language and acculturation classes for foreign-born Alexandria residents. The classes will help prepare them to move into the American mainstream, to understand American values, and to become financially secure.

The English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes are conducted by a corps of volunteers. Teacher training is provided. The life skills workshops on topics such as HIV/AIDS, crime prevention, domestic violence, employment, and health issues are led by representatives from private and public agencies.

Qualifications:

Able to speak English clearly and simply. Able to establish open and friendly relationships with students, yet maintain leadership of the group. Conscientious, reliable, enthusiastic, positive, accepting attitude. Ability to speak Spanish a plus but not essential, since classes are conducted in English.

Time:

Classes meet Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., with teachers committing to either one or two evenings per week for the period of September - May.

Classes meet at George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mount Vernon Avenue
