For Immediate Release: October 4, 2010

City of Alexandria Urban Forestry Steering Committee to Hold 6th Annual Fall Tree Sale Saturday, October 23
"Great Trees, Great Prices, and Great for Alexandria"

The City’s Alexandria’s Urban Forestry Steering Committee (UFSC) and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will hold a tree sale on Saturday, October 23, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave.  The goal of the sale is to promote the preservation of the Alexandria’s tree canopy by encouraging the planting of trees on private property throughout the City. Alexandria Tree Stewards and Master Gardeners will be on site to answer questions about tree selection, planting and care.

The City’s tree supplier, Denison Landscaping and Nursery of Ft. Washington, Md., will provide the same varieties of trees the City plants -- hardy and successful in this area – in three to fifteen gallon containers that residents can easily handle and plant. Trees will be sold at below retail market prices to encourage private planting in Alexandria, a major goal of the UFSC. Download the Tree Sale Pre-Order Form and list of Available Trees for Purchase.

Residents can reserve trees for purchase in advance through October 19. No deposit is necessary. To reserve a tree, complete the pre-order form, call John Noelle, City Arborist, at 703.746.5499 or e-mail john.noelle@alexandriava.gov. When making your tree purchase reservation, please provide a name, telephone number, and the type and quantities of the tree that you plan to purchase.

Advance tree orders may be picked up between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 23. Reserved trees that are not picked up by 10 a.m. on the day of the sale will be made available to the public.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City’s Human Rights Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format, call John Noelle, City Arborist, at 703.746.5499, (TTY 703.838.4902) or e-mail john.noelle@alexandriava.gov.
