The Department of Recreation Parks and Cultural Activities is now accepting registrations for the 2010-2011 school year Out of School Time Programs. Program hours begin when school is dismissed until 6 p.m. The theme for this school year is “Power-On to the Arts.”
Out of School Time Programs include the Power–On Program for elementary students from 5 (registered in Kindergarten) to 12 years of age, and the Power-Up Program is for middle school students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The registration fee for participants is $50 for the full school year. Financial assistance is available for eligible families. On October 15, the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities' Alexandria City Community Theatre (ACCT) presents “Spanglish,” life lessons as illustrated by Aesop, himself, penned centuries ago, at the Lee Center’s Kauffman Auditorium , 1108 Jefferson St. The production features singing (in English & Spanish) and dancing. Police Memorial Finalists on Display
Police Memorial finalists will be on display at City Hall, 301 King St., through Friday, October 8. On October 11, the displays will be moved to the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St. The public is encouraged to view the proposals and add their comments to a notebook that will be located next to the displays or via e-mail to aca@alexandriava.gov, please write “Police Memorial Comment” in subject line. City of Alexandria Commission for the Arts Schedules Grants Program Workshop
The Alexandria Commission for the Arts will conduct a grant workshop on Wednesday, October 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Durant Arts Center, 1605 Cameron St. The workshop will provide information about the Commission’s annual grant program, which provides funding to non-profit arts organizations for various arts programs, and instructions for the on-line application process. All applicants including past grant recipients are encouraged to attend one of the grant workshops. During the holidays, Market Square glistens with the sparkling majesty of a Holiday Tree, made possible only through a generous donation each year. The City of Alexandria is once again in search of a Colorado Blue Spruce, Leyland Cypress or other well-formed evergreen tree, approximately 25 to 35 feet tall, to serve as the City’s official 2010 Holiday Tree. The City will remove the tree from the donor’s property in mid-November and grind the stump at no cost. The tree will be decorated and displayed at Market Square, 301 King St., throughout the holiday season. Persons in the Washington metropolitan area who are interested in donating a tree should call John Noelle, City Arborist, at 703.746.5499 or e-mail john.noelle@alexandriava.gov.
The City of Alexandria experienced the loss of hundreds of trees and extensive damage throughout the City as a result of winter snow and summer thunderstorms in 2010. Residents, who want to help replenish the City’s tree canopy, may consider the following opportunities: Make a donation to the Living Landscape Fund of Alexandria; Request a street tree through the Street Tree Planting Program; or Purchase a tree from the City Tree Sale on October 23 at George Washington Middle School. James Mulligan Park, 3000 S. 28th St. (Closed for Renovation)
Construction began in early September and is nearly complete, with an anticipated mid-October completion. All existing equipment has been removed and replaced with new play pieces, including a 360 degree climbing structure, 2 spinner devices, a see saw, and a swing set with toddler and school age seats. A new perimeter border and drainage system have also been completed. Rubber safety surfacing and new benches will be installed early October.
Stevenson Park, 300 Stultz Rd. (Closed for Renovation)
Construction started in late September. All existing play equipment has been removed and will be replaced with new swings and a modular structure with climbers, slides, and other unique play elements. A new four-square court is planned for the old swing area. Other improvements include new benches, refurbishing the open picnic areas, adding a new grill, and completing park-wide tree work. The brush behind the play area was recently cleared for improved visibility.
The anticipated completion date is mid-November.
Tarleton Park - Holmes Run Trail, south of Jenkins St. and Vermont Ave. (Renovation to begin early October)
The renovation is scheduled to begin early October with a mid November completion. The new Tarleton play area will be relocated north of the existing fenced play area. The new play area is designed for toddlers ages 2-5, includes a train theme play structure, climbing turtle, see saw and toddler swings. The existing equipment will be removed. The play area will be closed during the renovation.

Jones Point Park, 65 acres in size, is and will remain owned, maintained and operated by the National Park Service as land of the US Department of Interior. The entire Jones Point Park will not be closed to public access during construction. The Royal Street Community Gardens, the Lee Street Community Gardens, the Mount Vernon Trail and the Community Recycling Center will have continuous public access. Public access to some portions of the park will be temporarily/intermittently closed while improvements are being made.
