Monday, September 20 – Community Meeting on Open Space Properties at 4109 – 4125 Mt. Vernon Ave.
The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities invites the public to attend a meeting with the community to begin the park planning and design process for the open space properties at 4109 – 4125 Mt. Vernon Ave., including an update and discussion about the approved community use of the former Duron Paint store building.  The meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m., at the Cora Kelly Recreation Center, 25 West Reed Ave.  The purpose of the meeting is to gather input from the community about potential park elements that would support the community use of the property and to discuss a concept plan for the site developed by area architects.

Monday, September 20 – Nominations Due to Charles Houston Recreation Center Naming Committee
The Ad Hoc Charles Houston Recreation Center Naming Committee, established to honor individuals who made outstanding contributions to Alexandria’s African American community by dedicating recreation center rooms in their honor, seeks nominations of honorees for a second round of dedications. Specifically, the Committee seeks nominations of people who participated in the struggle to advance African Americans economically, socially, educationally, and religiously from the 1920s to 1965. Nomination packets may be mailed or dropped off to RPCA, c/o Jack Browand, Division Chief, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Monday, September 20 – Public Comments Due on Proposed Del Ray Mural
The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking public comment on a proposed mural to be painted at Art on the Avenue scheduled for Saturday, October 2. The purpose of the Del Ray Mural Youth Project is to involve local youth in a meaningful public art project that not only produces an inspiring work of art but provides a valuable learning experience for the youth involved. The Del Ray Mural Youth Project will culminate with the painting of a mural on the outside wall of the gymnasium at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, located at 2701 Commonwealth Ave. The public is invited to view the concept board of the mural and submit comments through Monday, September 20. Renderings of the mural will be on display in the lobby of the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center during normal operating hours. Thursday, September 23 - Public Hearing on Concept Plan for Proposed Park at the New James Bland Development
The City of Alexandria’s Park and Recreation Commission is hosting a public hearing to discuss the proposed concept plan submitted by Eakin Youngentob Associates (EYA) for a new public park to be located within the recently approved James Bland residential development, now known as Old Town Commons. The public hearing will provide a public forum for EYA to 1) gather community input about potential park elements that would support the community’s use of the site; and 2) discuss the concept plan for the site. Provide Input on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 Budget
The City of Alexandria expects FY 2012 to be another challenging year as we continue to plan strategically for the future. As the City begins the budget process, we would like public input regarding the FY 2012 Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program. Our goal is to link the budget process more closely to the Strategic Plan, adopted by City Council. On Saturday, October 16, the public is invited to attend City Council’s public hearing to offer your comments regarding the upcoming budget and how the City should use its limited resources to meet our most important community goals. 2010 Business Personal Property Tax Bills Mailed
The City of Alexandria has mailed 2010 Business Personal Property Tax bills to all businesses that were operating in the City as of January 1, 2010.  If you do not receive a business personal property tax bill by September 15, please contact Business Tax by phone at 703.746.3903 or by email at businesstax@alexadnriava.gov.  You may also contact the City’s Treasury Division by email at payments@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703.746.3902.  Taxpayers who have had a change of address and have not previously reported this change to the City should contact Business Tax so that a bill can be provided for them prior to the October 5 due date.  For more information on the business personal property tax, please visit alexandriava.gov/businesstax.  For information on payment options, including new cash payment centers, please visit alexandriava.gov/payments.

The City of Alexandria has mailed 2010 Vehicle Personal Property Tax bills to all vehicle owners residing in the City.  If you do not receive a personal property tax bill by September 15, please contact Personal Property at vehicletax@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.3995.  You may also contact the City’s Treasury Division at payments@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.3902.  Taxpayers who have had a change of address or have disposed of a vehicle and have not previously reported this change to the City should contact Personal Property so that an adjusted bill can be provided for them prior to the October 5 due date.  For more information on personal property taxes, please visit alexandriava.gov/cartax.  For information on payment options, including new cash payment centers, please visit alexandriava.gov/payments.

King Street Paving Project
The City of Alexandria is resurfacing King Street, between Columbus Street and the King Street Metro. The scope of the King Street improvement project includes two phases. The first phase is nearly complete, and includes curb and gutter repairs and new ADA accessible ramps at crosswalks. Crews will be obtaining pavement core sampling along King Street from Columbus to Dangerfield on Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19. During the sampling process, the City will post "No Parking" signs in the areas of sampling between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The second phase, which includes milling and paving, will begin in late September. It is scheduled Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and will last two to three weeks, weather permitting.
