The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking public comment on a proposed mural to be painted at Art on the Avenue scheduled for Saturday, October 2. The Del Ray Mural Youth Project will culminate with the painting of a mural on the outside wall of the gymnasium at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, located at 2701 Commonwealth Ave.
The purpose of the Del Ray Mural Youth Project is to involve local youth in a meaningful public art project that not only produces an inspiring work of art but provides a valuable learning experience for the youth involved. While design, planning and preparations for the mural will occur beforehand, the bulk of the painting will be done throughout the day on October 2 as part of Art on the Avenue. The mural with be a temporary art piece, and the intention is to paint a new mural every two years at Art on the Avenue, continuing this "art in action" tradition.
The mural project will involve the creative designs of five youth teams which will be integrated into an overall mural setting depicting the Del Ray community. Within sections of the mural, the youth teams will each paint their interpretation of one of the articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These articles include rights such as "The right to education," "The right to artistic expression," and "The right to public assembly" A team of local artists Leisa Collins, Corinne Marlowe and Forest Allread are coordinating the project.
The public is invited to view the concept board of the mural and submit comments through Monday, September 20. Renderings of the mural will be on display in the lobby of the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center during normal operating hours. Those interested in providing comments will be able to record their comments in a notebook near the display or email them to aca@alexandriava.gov, subject line: Del Ray Mural. All comments received by September 20 will be reviewed by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts.
