Saturday, September 11 – Remembrance Ceremony for 9/11
City of Alexandria’s public safety departments will host a joint memorial service honoring the sacrifice of our nation’s first responders in the aftermath of the attacks on September 11, 2001. Tuesday, September 14 – Citizenship Day Ceremony
The City of Alexandria will join the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in recognizing up to 30 individuals as naturalized United States citizens at its Citizenship Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. The ceremony will take place at Market Square, 301 King St., in front of City Hall. During the event, the honorees will be sworn in and will take the oath of allegiance for United States citizenship. This event also recognizes Constitution Day and National Citizenship Day, traditionally celebrated on September 17. 2010 Business Personal Property Tax Bills Mailed
The City of Alexandria has mailed 2010 Business Personal Property Tax bills to all businesses that were operating in the City as of January 1, 2010.  If you do not receive a business personal property tax bill by September 15, please contact Business Tax by phone at 703.746.3903 or by email at businesstax@alexadnriava.gov.  You may also contact the City’s Treasury Division by email at payments@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703.746.3902.  Taxpayers who have had a change of address and have not previously reported this change to the City should contact Business Tax so that a bill can be provided for them prior to the October 5 due date.  For more information on the business personal property tax, please visit wwwalexandriava.gov/businesstax. 2010 Vehicle Personal Property Tax Bills Mailed
The City of Alexandria has mailed 2010 Vehicle Personal Property Tax bills to all vehicle owners residing in the City.  If you do not receive a personal property tax bill by September 15, please contact Personal Property at vehicletax@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.3995.  You may also contact the City’s Treasury Division at payments@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.3902.  Taxpayers who have had a change of address or have disposed of a vehicle and have not previously reported this change to the City should contact Personal Property so that an adjusted bill can be provided for them prior to the October 5 due date.  For more information on personal property taxes, please visit www.alexandriava.gov/cartax.  For information on payment options, including new cash payment centers, please visit www.alexandriava.gov/payments.

Charles Houston Recreation Center Naming Committee Seeks Nominations
The Ad Hoc Charles Houston Recreation Center Naming Committee, established to honor individuals who made outstanding contributions to Alexandria’s African American community by dedicating recreation center rooms in their honor, seeks nominations of honorees for a second round of dedications. Specifically, the Committee seeks nominations of people who participated in the struggle to advance African Americans economically, socially, educationally, and religiously from the 1920s to 1965, who have made 1) a doctrinal or technical contribution; 2) an innovation with an identifiable impact on Alexandria's African American community; 3) efforts that were an inspiration to others; or, 4) any combination of the above that records the excellence of their achievements for posterity.

Nomination packets may be mailed or dropped off to RPCA, c/o Jack Browand, Division Chief, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314. King Street Paving Project
The City of Alexandria is resurfacing King Street, between Columbus Street and the King Street Metro. The scope of the King Street improvement project includes two phases. The first phase began on July 12 and includes curb and gutter repairs and new ADA accessible ramps at crosswalks. The work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for approximately eight weeks. The second phase, which includes milling and paving, will start in mid-September. It is scheduled Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and will last two to three weeks, weather permitting.
