On August 6, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille, and Dominion Virginia Power representative David Koogler, held a press conference at the Station at Potomac Yard to discuss their efforts in recovering from damage caused by severe weather in Alexandria on August 5.

Highlights from the Mayor's Statement

The severe weather on August  5 produced hurricane force winds and Alexandria sustained a direct hit. The Del Ray, Old Town and North Ridge areas have the most extensive damage.

Our top priority remains the safety of our residents and clearing debris from all roadways to keep the roads accessible to emergency and utility vehicles. Despite the sever storms we are happy to report there were no serious injuries to residents and major City infrastructure remained intact.

A storm of this magnitude will take days to recover from. The City is working as hard as we can and using every available resources to clean up, but residents have to be patient.

Over the next seven to ten days, crews will be collecting tree debris from the curb and public areas. The City is temporarily relaxing some of its normal requirements for removal of tree debris on private property.

Residents removing tree debris on their property should place tree limbs and debris at the curb, and if possible, cut them down to pieces that you, can safely take to the curb. If a professional tree removal contractor is hired, they should remove all debris from the site.

Residents should call 703-746-HELP to report damage to homes and business or ask for assistance.

We are asking residents to be patient, and continue to work together during this challenging situation.
