Update on Recovery Operations

The City of Alexandria is finishing debris collection from the severe storms on August 5, which brought down hundreds of trees and caused extensive damage throughout the City. Trash and debris collection operations are back to normal; residents should now comply with the City’s regular policy regarding debris collection. This policy requires residents to set out limbs no greater than 2-3 inches in diameter, cut limbs down to lengths no greater than four feet, and place them in bundles no heavier than 75 pounds for curbside collection.

Tree crews also discovered that many trees that are still standing are potential hazards to the community. Many of the trees suffered a direct hit from other trees falling during the storm, or otherwise significantly damaged. The City has identified 152 trees that have been removed, or are scheduled for removal, to protect the community. Many of these trees are split and have significant damage to the holding wood. These trees have been marked and the City has placed “no parking” signs in front of them so that crews can access and remove them.

Permit Requirements Eased for Storm Damage Repairs

The recent storm has caused considerable damage and disruptions to many homes and businesses. In order to make the restoration process as easy as possible, the normal requirements for submitting plans before repairs may be undertaken have been waived. A Virginia-licensed contractor should complete and submit a building permit application along with a copy of an insurance damage estimate that lists the work and materials needed to restore your property. When an insurance company is not involved, a contractor's work plan and contract will suffice. The permit application should state that the work is for August 5 storm repairs. Individuals may approach residents, representing themselves as City contractors, and requesting fees to remove trees. This is fraudulent activity and should be reported to Alexandria Police at 703.838.4444.
