FALL 2010 RECREATION PROGRAM GUIDE

Subscribers to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will receive the Fall 2010 Recreation Program Guide in the mail by August 16 and the guide will be posted online Monday, August 9. As part of the City of Alexandria’s Eco-City Initiative, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities has reduced the number of printed program guides and no longer automatically mails them to all households. Only individuals who have subscribed will continue to receive the program guide by mail. Registration for fall 2010 classes begins on Wednesday, August 25 for City residents and Friday, August 27 for nonresidents. SUMMER CONCERTS

Featuring a variety of musical entertainment, all concerts are free. Concerts are cancelled in the event of inclement weather and subject to change without notice. For up-to-date information, call the Special Events Hotline at703.746.5592 or visit www.alexandriava.gov/concerts.

Visitors to the historic district are encouraged to take Metro rail Yellow or Blue lines to the King Street Station in Old Town and take the King Street Trolley; take DASH or Metro buses; or park in one of the convenient parking garages or lots. Summer Camps continue through August. Kids can fill their summer playing with robots, kicking a soccer ball, swimming and walking through nature just to name a few. NEIGHBORHOOD MINI POOLS HOURS EXTENDED

The City's Neighborhood "Mini" Pools, John Ewald Pool, 4500 Duke St., and The Memorial Pool at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St., will now be open on weekends through Monday, September 6, 2010. The Neighborhood Pools' operating hours are Monday - Friday from noon to 6 pm; Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm; and Sunday, noon to 6 pm. In addition, Adult Only hours are available at the two neighborhood pools on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7 pm. Admission is free. WEST END FARMER’S MARKET

Sunday, August 22 - West End Farmers’ Market Closed at Ben Brenman Park
The West End Farmers’ Market will be closed in preparation for the Annual Cambodian Community Day Festival. The West End Farmers’ Market will reopen Sunday, August 29 and continue Sundays through November 21. For more information, call 703.746.4343.

City of Alexandria Farmers’ Markets 
The City of Alexandria is host to a variety of farmers’ markets, including the Old Town Farmers’ market and Del Ray Farmers’ Market on Saturday; the West End Farmers’ Market and Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market on Sunday; and the Upper King Street Fresh Farmers’ Market on Wednesday. Markets feature colorful displays of fresh, locally grown, in-season vegetables and fruits, gourmet coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, meat, bakery items and artisans. Alexandria Film Festival Seeks Film Submissions through August 15
The Alexandria Film Festival is now accepting film entries from U.S. and international filmmakers. The fourth annual festival will be held Thursday, November 4 – Sunday, November 7 at various locations throughout the City. The Film Festival is partnering with Withoutabox, the film industry’s premiere online service platform. To submit your film online, please visit www.withoutabox.com/login/7816. JONES POINT PARK CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Jones Point Park, 65 acres in size, is and will remain owned, maintained and operated by the National Park Service as land of the US Department of Interior. The entire Jones Point Park will not be closed to public access during construction. The Royal Street Community Gardens, the Lee Street Community Gardens, the Mount Vernon Trail and the Community Recycling Center will have continuous public access. Public access to some portions of the park will be temporarily/intermittently closed while improvements are being made. For up to date information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/34692.
