Saturday, July 10 – “Harlem’s Mart 125: The American Dream” Screening
At 4:30 p.m. at the Alexandria Black History Museum (902 Wythe St.), explore the history of Mart 125 and learn how it correlates to the “revitalization” of 125th Street, Harlem’s main commercial sector. This film follows the economic transition of 125th Street from the late 1960s to the present day, examining issues like urban renewal from a commercial standpoint. This free screening is part of Movies with a Mission, a series of films about Africa and the African Diaspora that seek to inform and inspire dialogue. Tuesday, July 13 – From Books to Film Discussion Group
Readers and film buffs are invited to Beatley Central Library to discuss films and the written works that inspired them. The next meeting will start at 7 p.m. and participants will discuss the play Hamlet and other films adapted from the works of William Shakespeare. Wednesday, July 14 – Teen Participants Needed for Focus Group
The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy is seeking local 18-19 year old teens to participant in a focus group on Wednesday, July 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Focus group participants will provide their views about perceptions and behaviors regarding teen pregnancy and birth control. Comcast and the City of Alexandria present the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival at Waterfront Park, 1A Prince St. Movie goers are invited to enjoy two nights of free outdoor movies, featuring “The Blind Side” on July 16 and “Transformers Revenge of the Fallen” on July 17. Attendees can purchase their favorite movie snacks like fresh popcorn and homemade lemonade. Movies start at dusk. Movies may be cancelled due to inclement weather. The City of Alexandria is host to a variety of farmers’ markets, including the Old Town Farmers’ market and Del Ray Farmers Market on Saturday; the West End Farmers’ Market and Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market on Sunday; and the Upper King Street Fresh Farmers’ Market on Wednesday. Markets feature colorful displays of fresh, locally grown, in-season vegetables and fruits, gourmet coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, meat, bakery items and artisans.
