The Alexandria Police Department will provide increased assistance to Alexandria City Public Schools as students return to school following last week’s historic winter storms. Additional police personnel will be assigned to each City school between 9:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M. this Wednesday, February 17, through Friday, February 19. Officers will assist with safety during arrival and dismissal periods.
All motorists, pedestrians and students are advised to use extra caution as the City and Schools get back to normal operations. High snow banks, snow covered sidewalks and icy areas will continue to be a challenge for several days. Protecting the safety of our students is our priority, but must be a community effort.
As schools open, Police ask residents to please assist by continuing to clear student walking routes, escorting students to school or bus stops and driving with increased care during these challenging circumstances. In order to minimize the number of vehicles driving near school entrances, parents who usually drive their children to school are asked to walk or carpool if possible.
The Police Department would like to remind drivers that the speed limit in school zones is posted at 15 or 25 mph. Motorists are urged to obey school zone speed limits throughout the day, not just when lights are flashing, since delayed openings may cause increased activity near school zones throughout the day. Drivers are also reminded that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its lights flashing.
“Pedestrian safety, particularly when it comes to young children, is always a priority for the Police Department,” said Chief of Police Earl Cook. “We are happy to work with the Schools and other City agencies in our efforts to maximize the safety of our children.”
