[Archived] City of Alexandria Government Closed Thursday, Feb. 11; Emergency Services Personnel Report to Work as Scheduled

Snow Removal Efforts Focused on Providing Citywide Access to Emergency and Utility Vehicles

For Immediate Release: February 10, 2010

The National Weather Service continues to report life-threatening blizzard conditions in Alexandria, with more than 10 inches of new snowfall since yesterday, and more accumulation expected tonight.  Drifts of up to 4 feet have been reported, and a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m.  High winds are expected to continue through the night, with dangerous wind chills; residents are advised to stay off the roads.

Due to the current forecast, road conditions, and ongoing recovery efforts, Alexandria City Public Schools, City of Alexandria government facilities, and all normal government operations will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 11. All emergency and support personnel for emergency conditions are required to report on time to support Alexandria’s emergency operations.

The following City facilities and services will be affected:

As the City’s state of emergency continues, snow removal efforts are focused on making routes passable for emergency and utility vehicles. Crews are working around the clock tonight to make primary roads passable for emergency and utility vehicles. Once primary roads are passable, crews will focus on making secondary, and then residential roads passable for emergency vehicles. However, due to the incredible amount of snow received, residents can expect that snow removal efforts will take several more days.

City crews are also inspecting City facilities and schools and removing snow as necessary to mitigate the potential of roof collapse.  Residents may observe rooftop activity and heavy equipment such as cranes.  There have been no roof collapses at any City facilities or schools.
