On January 12, the City of Alexandria’s Uptown/Parker-Gray Historic District was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Uptown/Parker-Gray Historic District is located north of Old Town Alexandria, with approximate boundaries from Cameron Street up to First Street, and North Columbus Street to Buchanan and North West Streets.
A listing in the National Register of Historic Places provides formal recognition of a property’s historical, architectural, or archeological significance based on national standards used by every state. The nomination recognizes the historic architecture of the district and social history of the Uptown/Parker-Gray Historic District, including the African-American contribution, that has occurred in this neighborhood since its inclusion within Alexandria City boundaries in the 1790s. The listing identifies nearly a thousand contributing historic structures within the Uptown/Parker-Gray Historic District.
“The City of Alexandria is excited to have the National Park Service accept the Parker-Gray Historic District as a National Register District after many years of work by the community,” stated Mayor William D. Euille. “This nomination documents the history of the neighborhood and African-American heritage for present and future generations. It will also enable owners of eligible property in the district to benefit from federal and state tax credit programs when restoring their historic buildings.”
