For More Information:

On Tuesday, October 20, the City of Alexandria was recognized by the Virginia Municipal League (VML) at its annual conference for being a green and sustainable community. The Go Green Government Challenge, a VML initiative, encourages local governments to reduce energy usage and promote environmental sustainability.

VML certified the City at the platinum level, which is the highest level for local governments, achieving more than 175 points out of 200 points. The City was given maximum points for the innovative adoption of the Eco-City Environmental Charter, the first of its kind, and Environmental Action Plan 2030. Alexandria also received recognition for its new and progressive Green Building policy for multi-family and commercial buildings.

This is the second year in a row the City was recognized by VML. In 2008, the City was recognized by VML for being one of the top three "greenest local governments” for cities with a population greater than 90,000.
