July 24, 2009

Outer Loop of Capital Beltway I-95/495 North to be Reduced to Two Lanes in Eisenhower Avenue Connector Area

From 6 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 25 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, July 27 through Thursday, July 30

As part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, weather permitting, the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway Interstate 95/495 will be reduced to two lanes in the area of the Eisenhower Avenue Connector from 6 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 25 and from 10 a.m. to the 3 p.m. daily Monday, July 27 through Thursday, July 30 for work related to widening the Beltway in this area.

At all other times, the Outer Loop is to have three travel lanes with the right lane diverted to the right to use the Eisenhower Avenue Connector ramps as a third travel lane.

The Connector continues to remain closed to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians through September to allow deck replacement work on the Beltway Bridge above the Connector.

Vehicle traffic from Eisenhower Avenue to the Inner Loop of the Beltway is now the only remaining movement allowed from the Connector. An earlier closure of the exit ramp from the Inner Loop to the Connector is scheduled to remain in place into October, when the new Inner Loop Local lanes will be completed and all Inner Loop traffic shifted to the new lanes west of the Beltway Bridge above Cameron Run.

Signs have been posted alerting motorists that Exit 174 is closed and to follow detours via Van Dorn Street or Telegraph Road to access Eisenhower Avenue from the Outer Loop. Additional signs alert bicyclists and pedestrians that the Connector is closed to them and that they should use alternative routes. South Van Dorn Street is a possible alternative.

Please use caution when traveling in the Eisenhower Connector area. All construction-related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, material and contractor availability or other unforeseen conditions.
