At its Board of Directors meeting today, the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) Board of Directors named Val P. Hawkins as its new President and CEO, effective July 13, 2009. As CEO of the AEDP, Hawkins will be responsible for leading efforts to grow the tax base, diversify the economy, and attract and retain businesses and organizations in Alexandria, Virginia. Founded in 1981, AEDP joins with its City collaborators in defining and marketing Alexandria as a creative, diverse, knowledge-based community with a high quality of life.
“Val brings all the talent, experiences and know-how we were looking for as we searched for our new leader,” said AEDP Chair Allison Cryor DiNardo. “He has experience in real estate development, finance, and management. We’re delighted he’s joining our team to promote business here in Alexandria.”
Mr. Hawkins, an Alexandria resident, has more than 40 years of real estate and financial experience. As a former Senior Managing Director of the USAA Real Estate Company, Hawkins led the team responsible for the management and leasing of the USAA Real Estate Company’s commercial real estate portfolio, which includes 33 million square feet, valued at $3 billion throughout the country. He also managed the delivery of real estate services to other institutional and corporate clients.
Prior to joining USAA, Hawkins spent sixteen years working as a managing consultant who served as the CEO and Senior Operating Officer of five wholly owned Chemical Bank real estate subsidiaries. In this capacity, he was responsible for the management, development and disposition of commercial and residential real estate assets in Northern Virginia, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Hartford, Detroit, Chicago, Memphis, Tampa and Atlanta.
“I welcome Val Hawkins to Alexandria’s economic development team,” said Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille. As a 32-year resident of Alexandria, Val knows first-hand the assets we have here. With his longtime real estate development and finance background learned around the country, he also knows the best ways to promote business while cherishing what’s best in our community.”
Hawkins has an MBA from the Wharton School in Philadelphia, PA, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering, with a second major in Economics, from Lafayette College in Easton, PA.
