Saturday, June 6 – Civil War Sesquicentennial Meeting
The Office of Historic Alexandria and Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association are co-sponsoring a Civil War Sesquicentennial community planning meeting at George Washington Masonic National Memorial, 101 Callahan Dr., from 9 a.m. to noon. Both organizations want to gather public input and refine ideas for Alexandria’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. As part of the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, a local committee will participate in a statewide effort to develop a greater understanding of the cause, impact and aftermath of the war, based on the theme “Understanding Our Past, Embracing Our Future.” Activities associated with this initiative are planned to take place from 2011 to 2015. Saturday, June 6 - Alexandria Commission for the Arts Hosts a Goals-Setting Workshop for Grants Recipients
The Alexandria Commission for the Arts will host a Goals-Setting workshop from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to City’s arts grant recipients at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St. An Arts Commissioner with an expertise in the area of goals setting will be providing the workshop free of charge. Tuesday, June 9 – City Council Worksession on Potomac Yard Planning and Metro Feasibility

Wednesday, June 10 – Virginia Paving Liaison Committee Meeting
The Virginia Paving Liaison Committee will hold its next meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the mini-auditorium at Samuel Tucker Elementary School, 435 Ferdinand Day Dr. This committee was formed to discuss operations and to resolve any problems, conflicts or issues identified by the community related to Virginia Paving's operations. Thursday, June 11- Deadline for Submitting the 2009 CIVIC Awards Nominations
The Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission is seeking nominations for the 2009 CIVIC Awards. The annual awards program recognizes the volunteer efforts of Alexandrians who are involved in their communities and who have provided a valuable service in meeting recreation, park, and/or cultural needs. Saturday, June 13 – Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Police Headquarters Facility
The Alexandria City Council will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new police headquarters facility at 8:15 a.m. at 3534 Wheeler Ave. The headquarters will allow the City to consolidate Police operations from four locations, reducing significant spending on current and future leases for other buildings. Construction of the new headquarters facility will be completed by Fall 2011.
Saturday, June 13 – Public Hearing on Moving City Council, School Board Elections
The Alexandria City Council will hold a public hearing at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, 301 King St., to receive comments on a proposal to move City Council and School Board elections from May to November, beginning in 2012. The proposed ordinance would make no other changes to the electoral process (such as changing the length of Council or School Board terms, or staggering elections), since any other change would require the General Assembly to approve an amendment to the City Charter. Following the public hearing, the Council will take final action on the proposed ordinance.
Thursday, June 18 – Shuttle Access at Van Dorn Street Metrorail Station
The City of Alexandria and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) invite residents to attend a meeting regarding shuttle access at the Van Dorn Street Metrorail Station from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Days Inn Alexandria Hotel, 110 South Bragg St. Officials from Metro and the City will present recommendations on short- and long-term solutions for a safe and effective shuttle drop off/pick up this location that will meet the needs of residents, shuttle providers and Metro. Alexandria Marketing Fund Accepting Applications
Applications are now being accepted for the Alexandria Marketing Fund, a program administered by the Alexandria Marketing Committee. The program is designed to foster projects that enhance the long-range marketing priorities of the City; increase awareness, while expanding the quality, of Alexandria’s diverse retail, dining, hospitality, cultural attractions and other businesses; promote Alexandria to specific target audiences, including residents and visitors; and generate additional business sales and tax revenues in Alexandria.
