City of Alexandria Hosts “Fostering the Future” Cruise
All Proceeds to Support The Fund for Alexandria’s Child
June 5, 2009
The public is invited to the Sixth Annual Fostering the Future Cruise, “Pirates in Parrotdise,” on Wednesday, June 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., aboard the Cherry Blossom in Old Town Alexandria. The evening of tropical music, dance, food and drink benefits Alexandria’s most vulnerable children—those who are in foster care and who are at risk of abuse and neglect. The event, hosted by the Advisory Council of The Fund for Alexandria’s Child in the City of Alexandria’s Department of Human Services, is sponsored by the Jimmy Buffet fan group, the Washington Area Parrot Head Club.
The Pirates in Parrotdise cruise kicks off with a 6:30 p.m. cocktail reception at the dock at Cameron and Union Streets behind the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Guests are invited to show up in pirate garb and flip-flops and enjoy music from The Nautical Wheelers Band and Michael George Steel Drum Band, while being served hors d’oeuvres from Bookbinder’s, Bittersweet, Taqueria Poblano, Evening Star, Chart House and Bombay Curry. At 7:30 p.m., it’s all aboard the Cherry Blossom for dinner, dancing and cruising on the Potomac. Mango Mike’s Restaurant will serve a full buffet of Key West cuisine and specialty drinks, sodas, beer and wine. Whole Foods Market Old Town will provide a selection of desserts. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a 32-inch flat screen television, donated by Best Buy Landmark, and participate in a silent auction that includes premium Washington Redskins and Nationals tickets, restaurant certificates, beauty treatments and much more! To preview and bid on auction items, visit www.alexandriava.gov/TheFundForAlexChild.
Tickets are $75 per person (adults only, please), and are tax-deductible. All proceeds go directly to support The Fund for Alexandria’s Child, which provides funds for enrichment activities for children in foster care or at risk of abuse and neglect.
