At its April 9, 2009 meeting, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) voted to discontinue the Code Red RIDE FREE program in Northern Virginia. For the past decade, the program encouraged the use of public transit on forecast Code Red Bad Air days by providing free bus rides to commuters.
Reducing single occupancy vehicle trips and encouraging use of public transportation are some of the best ways to combat harmful emissions. As part of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative, the City encourages residents to continue to bicycle, walk, rideshare, and use public transit.
