[Archived] City of Alexandria to Celebrate Bike to Work Day, May 15

Residents Invited to Attend Free “Confident City Cycling” Classes

April 24, 2009

More Information:

In recognition of national Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 15, localities throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area will celebrate and promote bicycle commuting as an affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly way of getting to work. The City of Alexandria’s pit stop will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Market Square (301 King St.), providing an opportunity for commuter cyclists to interact and enjoy free food, beverages, and services provided by local businesses and sponsors.

Bike to Work Day is free and open to all commuters. Registration is required and cyclists who register before May 8 receive a free T-shirt at the Market Square pit stop.

The City of Alexandria also invites residents to attend free “Confident City Cycling” classes on May 9, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cora Kelly Recreation Center (25 W. Reed Ave.) and Thursday, May 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon Community Recreation Center (27011 Commonwealth Ave.). These classes do not require participants to have a bicycle and is an excellent way to learn the basics of bicycling prior to Bike to Work Day. For more information, or to register, visit www.waba.org/events/education.php.

Residents who do not have a bike, but wish to participate in Bike to Work Day, can do so for the first time this year. Participants can use a free one-day bike rental through Bike and Roll in Old Town Alexandria. Call 703.548.7566 to rent a bike free on Bike to Work Day.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City's Human Rights Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format call 703.519.3400, ext. 183. (TTY 703.838.5056) or e-mail yon.lambert@alexandriava.gov.
