[Archived] City Hosts “A Walk in the Park...Strides Toward Success” Walkathon

The City of Alexandria will host the 13th annual “A Walk in the Park...Strides Toward Success” walkathon on Saturday, April 25, at Fort Ward Park, 4301 W. Braddock Rd. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. The walkathon course is approximately two miles. All proceeds from the event will benefit Project Discovery-Alexandria, a program that helps low-income and/or first-generation students to succeed in getting into and completing college.

Suggested donations are $20 for adult walkers, $5 for students.  All registered participants will receive free t-shirts and be eligible to win prizes.
 
The Project Discovery-Alexandria Program motivates and prepares students for opportunities in higher education. The program provides participants with information on college admissions and financial aid, workshops on topics such as life skills and career planning, and ongoing support and encouragement. Project Discovery assists approximately 130 students at T. C. Williams High School and the T.C. Williams High School, Minnie Howard Campus each year.

Alexandria City Councilman Ludwig Gaines is the 2009 Walkathon Honorary Chair. Project Discovery Advisory Board Member Dean Munson is the 2009 Walkathon General Chair.

Project Discovery is a program of the City of Alexandria, Department of Human Services, Office of Youth Services.
