The Alexandria Fire Department requests the help of local media in getting the word out to the public that the heaviness of snow and melted, re-frozen snow may create a hazard to homes and commercial buildings.

At particular risk are flat roofs and light construction, such as additions to houses, canopies, awnings and overhangs on buildings.  The unusually heavy snow this week has added a significant amount of weight to roofs. Owners and residents should remove excessive amounts of snow from these types of construction.

In addition, it is important to clear the area on the ground around the openings of downspouts, scuppers, and roof drains so melting snow can be released.  If downspouts= openings are blocked, it is possible that the melted snow will re-freeze inside the downspouts and back up into the gutters.  This could cause significant damage to buildings and require costly repairs.
