At approximately 11:10 pm, Monday January 12, 2009, units from the Alexandria Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion in a kitchen at 469 N. Armistead Street.
First arriving units encountered heavy smoke conditions from a ground floor apartment and requested a second alarm. An aggressive interior fire attack was initiated, bringing the fire under control and containing it to the kitchen area.

The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental in nature. Residents of two apartment units were displaced due to fire and water damage, management relocated displaced residents. Red Cross responded and assisted residents of the apartment building. There were no working smoke alarms reported in the affected apartment. Damage to apartment building is estimated at $80, 000.
