[Archived] Celebrate the New Year at First Night Alexandria!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 22, 2008

Event Begins with King Street Mile at 5 p.m., Ends with Fireworks at Midnight

Alexandria will celebrate the new year in style as the City hosts First Night Alexandria on December 31.  Alexandria businesses will host musical performances, art shows and interactive activities in celebration of the New Year, capped off with a spectacular fireworks display at midnight.

The festivities will begin with the second-ever King Street Mile at 5:00 p.m., a one-mile race from Market Square on King St. to Union Station. The event is open to all runners with a time of eight minutes or less, and will feature Council members Rob Krupicka, Paul Smedberg and Justin Wilson. To learn more, or to register for the race, please visit www.firstnightalexandria.org/race.php.

First Night patrons will have the opportunity to participate in the City’s “Buy Alexandria, Our Dollars Count” campaign, as First Night Alexandria represents a chance to celebrate the City’s culture while also supporting the local economy. For a small fee (children 12 and under are free), patrons have access to the entertainment all evening long. Free shuttle buses are available to all performances, and free parking is available for those who drive. First Night Alexandria offers an alcohol-free celebration with a wide range of options for children, teens and adults. Approximately 70 acts on 40 stages will be available throughout the evening.
