[Archived] City of Alexandria’s Parks and Recreation Commission Schedules Public Hearing on Proposed Special Event Policies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : December 3, 2008

City of Alexandria’s Parks and Recreation Commission Schedules Public Hearing on Proposed Special Event Policies
Thursday, December 11

The City of Alexandria’s Parks and Recreation Commission invites residents to attend a public hearing to review and receive comment on the proposed City of Alexandria Special Event Policies. The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave.

The purpose of the public hearing is to present the Proposed City of Alexandria Special Event Policies to the Commission and receive comments from the public. In Fiscal Year 2007, City Council asked staff to initiate a study of the full costs associated with special events that are supported and provided by the City. As a result of the data gathered, staff identified the need to improve the procedures and policies related to the City's support of special events.

On October 28, 2008, City Council received a report on the Proposed Special Event Policies and referred it to the Parks and Recreation Commission. City Council requested that the Parks and Recreation Commission provide them with comments. After the Commission’s comments are incorporated, the City Council will also hold a separate public hearing at a later date to consider the Proposed Special Events Policies.

After discussion on the proposed special events policies has concluded on December 11, the Commission will hear comments from City residents on any other parks and recreation related issue.

Individuals who are unable to attend the public hearing can view the Proposed Special Event Policies online at www.alexandriava.gov/recreation beginning Thursday, December 4, and send written comments to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, Attention: William Chesley, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314, or e-mail william.chesley@alexandriava.gov.  The deadline to submit comments is Friday, December 19.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City’s Human Rights Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format, please call William Chesley, Deputy Director, at 703.838.5095, ext. 557 (TTY 703.838.4902), or e-mail william.chesley@alexandriava.gov.
