[Archived] Public Hearing Scheduled for Pocket Park at 1 and 7 East Del Ray Avenue

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 10, 2008

Public Hearing Scheduled for Pocket Park at 1 and 7 East Del Ray Avenue
Thursday, November 20

The City of Alexandria’s Parks and Recreation Commission invites residents to attend a public hearing to review and discuss the park plan for the property at 1 and 7 East Del Ray Avenue. The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 20 at 7 p.m., at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St. The property, which is part of the City’s Pocket Park Program, was acquired in January 2008. The park plan is the result of comments and suggestions from two previous community meetings and an upcoming community meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue.

The purpose of the public hearing is to present the park plan to the community and to discuss the park elements that support a passive, neighborhood use of the property. Pocket parks are designed to meet the needs of those who live or work within about a tenth of a mile of their location. They are less than 20,000 square feet, and may include such elements as public gardens, seating areas, passive open space, landscaped areas, important natural features, or trees.

After discussion on the park plan has concluded, the commission will hear comments from City residents on any other parks and recreation-related issue. A regular meeting of the Commission will follow the public hearing.

Individuals who are unable to attend the public hearing can view the park plan online at www.alexandriava.gov/recreation beginning November 21 and send written comments to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, Attention: William Chesley, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314, or e-mail william.chesley@alexandriava.gov. The deadline for submitting comments is Friday, December 5.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City’s Human Rights Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format, please call William Chesley, Deputy Director, at 703.838.5095, ext. 557 (TTY 703.838.4902), or e-mail william.chesley@alexandriava.gov.
